About this home:
High-Design meets High-Performance and Pre-Fabrication.
Designed by Little Giant Architecture and Interiors, Starshine will be a legacy for generations to come, delivering exacting design while achieving the highest levels of energy performance and comfort.
While many architects can deliver beauty, Little Giant’s collaboration with thinkBright Homes has elevated high-design beyond skin-deep to zero-operational carbon, high-performance, and superior energy efficiency.
With a strong Client focus on localizing materials, we supported a shift from US wood and stone to locally milled and quarried cedar and stone from the East Kootenay. Collective Carpentry has masterfully pre-fabricated the structure and building envelope. Local trades are implementing the highest quality of service to meet the standard set by the Architect and Client.
Building form and material selection intentionally integrate the home into the natural environment – cedar cladding and hemlock soffits are drawn indoors along the ceiling and walls. Exterior stone is repeated in the central interior fireplace. Trees have been protected to offer privacy and minimize visual impact, reinforcing a sense of continuity between the building and its surrounding landscape.
Starshine is a work-in-progress. We will update this page as it comes to life.
Benefits and Features
Energy-Efficiency Benefits
- Low carbon concrete with 40% fly-ash keeps the carbon footprint down. Extra insulation under the slab, and over the foundation walls ensure year-round comfort inside and out. Installation by Accurate Concrete.
- The interior and exterior walls, and the roof and floors were prefabricated by Collective Carpentry. Super-insulated, structural, low carbon, and up for the challenge of a complex design. Manufactured right here in Invermere!
- Precision mechanical system design was developed by Ecolighten Energy Services, and is being supplied and installed by Jefferson Contracting. This all-electric home will be heated and cooled by a cold-climate heat pump. A right sized ERV will keep the home fresh in all seasons, ensuring that indoor air quality is at least as fine as the design of the home!
- A high-efficiency wood stove will ensure the home stays warm, even if power goes out for days – a clear benefit of the super-insulated, air-tight building envelope.
- Wrapped in fire-resistant mesh by Genics, this home has been designed to face the reality of life in a changing climate.
